Nellie Gertrude Scott

Mrs. Nellie Gertrude Scott, was born Dec. 4, 1874 near Hillboro, Ill., moved with her parents and settled near Wellington, Kansas in 1876. She united with the M. E. church in 1892 and was a constant member and a faithful worker until her death. She was married to Samuel S. Scott, Feb. 19, 1895, at her home. She came with her husband the same year and settled near Blackwell, O. T. here have they lived until her death, Monday evening, Oct. 23, 1899.
Modest and retiring in nature, affectionate and cheerful in disposition, it was in the home life with sympathizing spirit she lightened the cares of the burdened husband, and it is the testimony of those who knew her best, that faithfulness was written upon every page of her life. It seems to us that no words descriptive of integrity of character, purpose of life or zeal for God would exaggerate the conduct and life of our sainted sister. A noble woman, a zealous Christian, a devoted wife, a self sacrificing mother and affectionate friend.
After a brief funeral service conducted at the home by B. C. Wolf. Pastor of the Braman charge, all that was mortal of this sainted young mother was laid to rest in the Blackwell cemetery.
She leaves a husband, twin babies eight months old, father and mother, nine brothers and sisters, but they sorrow not as others who have no hope.
B. C. Wolf.
Our hearts are sad, we cannot help
But breathe a heavy sigh;
We do not comprehend but may
In the sweet by and by
Why death comes suddenly into
A family circle, where
But four short years they lived
They sympathies to share,
And why the mother of the twain,
In prime of woman’s day;
Was called upon so suddenly
In God’s mysterious way.
We can but bow submissively
To God’s chastising rod;
And breathe a prayer in humbleness
Thy will be done, Oh God
